Hemingway’s Lost Generation Appears at Key West Theatre

Key West, Florida – April 15, 2004 – Visitors traveling to Key West, Florida can experience author and actor Brian Gordon Sinclair bringing the next segment of Hemingway’s life to Key West July 20, 21, 22, and 23, 2004. The Lost Generation, a one-man, multi-media performance, will be presented at the Waterfront Theatre in Mallory Square. Sinclair stars as Ernest Hemingway in this sequel to last year’s highly successful production of Sunrise.

In flashbacks, Sinclair presents a young Hemingway who, in two acts, experiences life after being wounded in World War I. Scenes featured in the first act acquaint the audience with his life in Petoskey, MI, his early work at the Toronto Star newspaper, and his marriage to Hadley Richardson. In Act II, Sinclair takes Hemingway to Paris to read, to write, and to live. He meets Ezra Pound, Gertrude Stein, skis in the Swiss Alps, and endures the loss of his manuscripts in a Paris train station. A brief return to Canada results in the birth of his son; however, a conflict with his editor at the Toronto Star sends him back to France. Eventually, Pauline Pfeiffer enters his life and he prepares to divorce Hadley. The act ends with the “100 day separation”.

The second in a projected series of five plays, The Lost Generation is intended to illuminate both the writing and the life of Ernest Hemingway in equal measures. The first play, Sunrise, was meticulously researched, well written, and superbly acted. The Lost Generation promises more of the same. “I want to bring Hemingway to life”, said Sinclair, “and I will use every ounce of my own training and talent to do so”.

Sinclair is a graduate of the National Theatre School of Canada and has a Master of Arts degree in theatre from the University of Denver. He has also studied at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Arts in London, England and at the National Film Board of Canada. He is a recipient of the Sir Tyrone Guthrie Award for acting at the Stratford Shakespeare Festival and has performed in Denmark, Holland, Poland and at the Moscow Art Theatre in Russia. Sinclair is the author of the acclaimed Irish play, Easter Rising: The Last Words of Patrick Pearse which depicts the destruction of Dublin in 1916 by British Artillery.
