One of the literary highlights of Hemingway Days in Key West this year was
one-man show by Brian Gordon Sinclair at the Waterfront Playhouse.
Something of a look alike himself from Papa’s middle years, Sinclair Gave
three brilliant performances sponsored by the Key West Art and Historical
Society.
The show’s title Hemingway on Stage: The Road to Freedom, Part 1: The
Early Years reflects it’s status as a work in progress. The first in a
projected series of five plays, it employs some of Hemingway’s own works
to paint a flesh and blood picture of the young Hemingway, the Hemingway
who already knew about death and found it “pretty easy".
For the first time, a stage play illuminates both the writing and the life
of Earnest Hemingway in equal measures. Meticulously researched, well
written and superbly acted, Hemingway On Stage is a must see production
for all lovers of Hemingway’s books, for all those who have been intrigues
by the life and death of this complex man.
Brian Gordon Sinclair, as creator and performer of this one-man play give
an intimate insight into the circumstances which shaped the famed authors
life and which inspired him in his writing. Listening to the author
perform, you will laugh at young Hemingway’s encounters, become a part of
his childhood and you will eventually realize what prompted this
successful writer to choose his way of death.
If you have read a Farewell to Arms, you will recognize the parting words
of the dying Katherine, spoken on stage with great feeling by Brian Gordon
Sinclair.
Hemingway On State is a multi-media show with an exceptional soundtrack
and a variety of Hemingway slides rear projected upon twin screens. It is
one of the most dramatic, intense, exhilarating and outstanding shows I
have ever seen. I can’t wait for the debut of Part II: Paris in 2004 at
the Hemingway Days Festival in Key West. Papa would be proud. |
